INSTITUTE OVERVIEW

FOR INFORMATION

The Ordway Research Institute was formed in 2002 to facilitate inter-institutional and interdisciplinary collaborations in basic and translational biomedical research in New York’s Capital District.  Research is focused on drug development in cancer, emerging infections and signal transduction/endocrinology.  An asset valuable to the pharmaceutical industry is Ordway’s mathematical modeling capability in pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics, one embodiment of which is the Institute for Clinical Pharmacodynamics (ICPD). Ordway is based in the Center for Medical Sciences (CMS), a new 150,000 square-foot research facility located at University Heights in Albany.

Ordway’s scientific teams are supported by awards from the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, National Science Foundation, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, American Heart Association and 15 biotechnology and major pharmaceutical companies. PK/PD modeling for the pharmaceutical industry accounts for about one-third of Ordway’s revenues.

The extramural collaborations at Ordway are supported by established memoranda of understanding with regional higher education, health care, and research institutions including Albany Medical College, University at Albany and Wadsworth Center of the New York State Department of Health.

The Charitable Leadership Foundation (CLF), based in Clifton Park, New York, played a lead role in incubating the Ordway Research Institute. CLF provided a $12 million charitable commitment to recruit nationally recognized scientists and their research teams to Ordway and the Capital Region. CLF also spearheaded the construction of the $56 million CMS in which Ordway’s laboratories and administration are housed.

The CMS was designed by the architectural firm of Perkins & Will/Shaw in Boston. Ordway scientists had important input in the configuration of CMS.  Its open laboratories, office clusters and conference space are arranged to foster and facilitate inter-institutional and inter-thematic collaborations. Ordway’s core laboratories include a high-throughput drug screening facility and dedicated operations for microarray/genomics, confocal microscopy, drug and protein analysis (LC/MS/MS) and facilities for in vitro automated measurements of drug PK and PD in human white blood cell and cancer cell models.

University Heights is an enriched area of education and discovery in Albany. Located here in addition to Ordway/CMS are Albany Medical College, the David Axelrod Institute of Wadsworth Center, Albany College of Pharmacy, Albany Law School, and the Sage Colleges of Albany. In addition to Ordway Research Institute laboratories, CMS contains research laboratories and core facilities for the Wadsworth Center.
