 The
biological and chemical processes driving life are generally known
as metabolism. When metabolism is unbalanced, disease states result.
The most common metabolic diseases are not the result of a single
genetic trait, but are polygenic and dependent upon changes that occur
with aging and poor lifestyle habits including overnutrition and physical
inactivity. These metabolic disturbances include obesity and atherosclerosis
leading to morbidity and mortality due to heart attacks, stroke and
peripheral vascular disease due to diabetes. It is estimated as much
as 25% of the US population is affected by these common metabolic
diseases costing billions of dollars in health care related expenses
each year.
The mission of the Center for Metabolic
Disease is to reduce the incidence of mortality, and severity and
duration of morbidity resulting from obesity, cardiovascular disease,
and diabetes through basic and applied research focused on the development
of novel diagnostic methods and pharmaceuticals. The CMD includes
basic and clinical science faculty members from the Ordway Research
Institute, Albany Medical College, and the Wadsworth Center of the
New York State Department of Public Health. Through shared resources
and collaborative research, the CMD facilitates integrated programs
to promote major advances in the diagnosis, management and treatment
of these complex diseases.
