Transportation ResourcesCapital District Transportation Authority (CDTA-local bus service) is the public (bus) transit system in the Capital Region. They strive daily to keep the regular route buses, shuttle buses, and para-transit service safe, reliable, and courteous. They’re especially proud to be an accessible system offering mobility to people with disabilities. The CDTA website offers all the information needed to travel safely and comfortably around the Capital Region. Click here for Instructions on how to use the bus system. You can also review CDTA schedules and the fare rates. Please note that fares and schedules quoted can change. Taxi Cabs can be called to your home by phone. Local companies are listed in the telephone directory. Most taxis do not have meters, the fare should be determined in advance. Railroad Transportation. Amtrak has a station in Rensselaer. Information pertaining to schedules and fares can be found here. For more information call 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245). Long Distance Bus Service. There are two main bus lines that travel throughout the state and country. The bus station is located in downtown Albany.
Bicycles. Many staff and scholars buy bicycles for convenient local transportation. Notices of used bicycles for sale are in local newspapers. There are many stores that sell both new and used bicycles; such stores are listed in the telephone directory. It is recommended that you call and shop around to compare prices and the quality. You should always test-ride a bicycle before buying. Be sure to lock bicycles to a stationary object whenever they are left unattended. A bicycle shop will advise you on a secure locking system. Padlocks are safer than combination locks. Wearing a good-quality bicycle helmet is also strongly recommended (they are required for riders under 18 years old). Helmets are available at the stores listed below.
Car Rental. Cars may be rented for a day, a weekend, or longer. Rental companies can be found under “Automobile Renting and Leasing” in the yellow pages of the telephone directory. Some agencies offer reduced rates and “package deals” over long holiday weekends. Most agencies will not rent to anyone under 25 years of age. A valid driver’s license is needed, and agencies require proof of automobile insurance, or that you purchase liability insurance at the time the car is rented. Motorcycles and Mopeds. Although they are inadequate for some transportation purposes, motorcycles and mopeds are a relatively inexpensive form of transportation. They must be registered at the State of New York Department of Motor Vehicles. Anyone operating a motorcycle or a moped must know the New York Vehicle Code (especially in regard to wearing helmets) and must have a license that specifically authorizes the driving of motorcycles. Driving and Owning a Car in New York State.
